At Category C Hospital Wari in Upper Dir, postpartum haemorrhage once often meant an urgent call to the Woman Medical Officer: please come and manage the patient.
For Dr. Shagufta, the calls now sound very different. Healthcare providers who have received training and continued support through AMAN’s WhatsApp group are increasingly able to manage postpartum haemorrhage themselves. Instead of asking her to take over, they now call to say the patient has been stabilised and ask her to review the case. As Dr. Shagufta described it, the call has changed from “please come and manage her” to “we have recovered the patient, you just come and see.”
The difference is more than a change in wording. It reflects greater confidence and capability among frontline providers, while keeping experienced clinicians connected when difficult cases arise. Dr. Shagufta noted that this has also reduced the burden on already overworked medical officers.
When more providers can respond to an emergency, care does not have to wait for one person to arrive. That is stronger healthcare in practice.
